1000 square kilometers is the enormous size of Just Cause 2's open world as one of the devs says in this video. I have serious doubts that it is that big. That would be 20 times the size of Fallout 3's Wasteland. 5 times the size Operation Flashpoint 2's Skira. Well, however, the island world called Panau really looks fantastic:
