What Happened to 1UP

Read this extra long post from Sam Kennedy, the remaining 1Up editor after the UGO deal.

So you can imagine what this week was like for me. My entire world collapsed. To see half of my team lose their jobs, and to see so much of what had I worked so hard to build just take a step back like that, it was like a bomb had just gone off at 101 Second Street. Never mind that we had such an incredibly talented team in place and such a well oiled machine producing content, but things that I had specifically worked so hard to fight for -- the 1UP Show (I’ve been supporting/defending that thing since I first saw the magic that Jane and Ryan were onto years ago), or the podcasts (it took me a full year, but I was able to create the role of Podcast Editor for skip after he proved just how great they were for us), or even the people like James Mielke (he was pretty bitter at Ziff Davis after GMR closed and wanted to go off and make games, but I convinced him to come back to work on 1UP by telling him that the industry, not just 1UP, needed him to continue doing the cool shit he does -- and I couldn’t have been more right) -- I was losing all of that.

I posted about this elsewhere, but what people need to remember is that 1UP was in a pretty bad spot. Never mind that Ziff Davis went through Chapter 11 bankruptcy last summer, but just looking at all the factors playing against us, it wasn’t a great picture. Our company wanted to get rid of us, we were losing money, the ad market was looking bleak, we all knew EGM was going to close…
